Chapter 19

Tim

To say the least, I was dubious of spending an evening at a hockey game, but I was willing to give it a chance. As I’d told Alex, I would try anything once. Besides, Alex enjoyed it, and he’d seemed really excited by the idea, so why not? If nothing else, I’d get to see him in his element.

I drove in and parked in one of the overpriced lots outside the arena, then walked to the gate where Alex said to meet him. He’d had a job interview this afternoon, and he was taking the subway across town and walking the rest of the way to the game. Afterward, I’d drive us both home. Made sense—no point in both of us coughing up thirty bucks for a parking space.

After I’d parked, I gathered the hoodie and hat I’d left on the passenger seat. They were too much for today’s weather, but Alex had told me to bring layers. Ideally, a sweatshirt or something.

“It’s comfortable outside,” he’d told me, “but we’ll be close to the ice.”

I could do the math on that one. I doubted they kept the place particularly balmy. For now, the weather was comfortable enough for just a T-shirt, so I kept my hoodie draped over my arm. Then I strolled down to the arena and joined the thickening crowd of fans waiting in line outside.

A little while later, Alex texted me that he was almost there, and just as I was texting him back that I was in line, he came into view. I waved. He nodded and started toward me.

Somehow I wasn’t surprised he’d worn a black and gold Pittsburgh Griffins jersey. As he joined me in line, I craned my neck to read the name across the back—Karlsson. “Favorite player?”

“Oh, I’ve got a few.” Alex tapped the letter C on the left side of his chest. “Karlsson’s the team captain. Hot as hell, but he’s also a damn good player.”

I cocked a brow. “So, you buy jerseys based on the hotness of the player?”

“I mean, it’s not the only factor.” He shrugged unrepentantly. “But the Griffins have a lot of seriously hot guys on the roster, so…”

I just chuckled. As much as I’d never cared for sports, I could appreciate the aesthetics of some athletes. Baseball players, especially. Hockey players? Well, I’d never heard anyone drooling over them, but I’d keep an open mind.

At exactly six o’clock, the gates opened, and after we’d gone through the metal detectors, Alex scanned our tickets on his phone, then led me to the escalators. I’d been to this place for concerts before, plus a monster truck event with the kids, but I didn’t really know the layout; Alex strode right through the crowd like he knew exactly where he was going, so I just stayed on his heels.

We each grabbed a beer at one of the concessions stands.

“See?” Alex held up his drink and gestured at the player printed on the side of the cup. “They’re hot!”

I looked closer at my own cup.
